LinkedIn Smackdown

For my WebTool Smackdown I will be presenting LinkedIn, a social networking application and website aimed at professionals. LinkedIn is one of the most used networking application especially among professionals looking to connect and collaborate with others. Users can take advantage of their many tools that they offer. This includes job search for both an employee and employer, messaging system, news feed and an online portfolio! You are able to update your account and portfolio quickly and efficiently through this app and this will allow for potential collaboratives to stay up to date with who you are as a professional and your goals. I have personally seen the tool work great for professionals. A colleague and fellow student was able to land her dream internship solely through connections on LinkedIn. She maintained a professional profile and made authentic and trusting relationships with the professionals she connected with.  The persistence and upkeep of her profile led to a...

As this class comes to an end, I have been able to reflect and appreciate everything that I have learned from this class. This class introduced to me to everything that online learning communities have to offer and how it can be utilized in my future career. Online learning communities allow for new connections to be made and authentic relationships to be formed all while learning from each other. I look forward to using all of the tools that have been brought to my attention through this class. The tools will not only be helpful in my career, but as I work towards my career. I never anticipated making a blog or knew how to even go about making one, but this class has taught me. Chapter 4 Blog

Collaborative culture is an important part in making and maintaining a learning community. Learning communities need both congenial and collegial relationships. Congeniality is the polite and friendly relationship individuals have with each other. Collegiality refers to a shared belief that no one is better or smarter than any individual in the group. Using these relationships allow members to establish trust. “Developing community norms that encourage truthfulness, openness, routine collaboration, and the ability to address difficult issues or conflict” (Nussbaum, 2012). Online connected learners work harder to establish relationships. The community norms will allow member s to feel more comfortable communicating and collaborating.             As a Physician Assistant and connected educator, I want to develop a community that encourages collaboration and truthfulness. Actions online...

Chapter 5 Blog

Creating an online learning community can be intimidating, but The Connected Educator explains you do not have to be a web expert to take advantage of the tools around you. These tools include tools for documenting, archiving, connecting, collaborating, social networking and extending learning in the classroom. Nussbaum provides examples for each category of tools and how they have been used to get connected. It takes time and practice to become familiar with the tools, but once you are familiar you will be able to use them to their fullest potential.             As a health care professional and connected educator, I would value many of these tools. Social bookmarking and tagging would allow me to know that articles, such as new research or breakthroughs, I may be saving for a certain learning discussion can be found easily and readily. Google Reader would allow me to be notified and subscribed to said research articles. S...

Chapter 6 Blog

Personal learning networks help you pull more in depth connections and relationships. With those networked connections you are able to grow an association of connected teachers and learners. To start your PLN, choose a toll of your choice and add members as you feel more confident. The most important part of the tool is not the name, but the outcome of the tool. Once settled on your tool, you are able to decide who to follow and use familiar and well-known bloggers as a reference or inspiration for your own. The author also explains that it is important to engage and nurture your network in ethical and safe ways. There is research explaining that an individual can only manage a network with a hundred and fifty people effectively at a time.             In th...
